British Army serviceEdit
In 1778, Gamble went to Valley Forge under the false pretense of a defecting redcoat with intelligence regarding a conspiracy within the Continental camp. He identifies himself as Sutherland and states that a civilian would soon stumble into camp with claims of information regarding a conspiracy as well, though this civilian is not to be trusted. Sutherland’s testimony that a civilian would soon enter the camp and make a bold yet unspecified claim—that General George Washington is to be assassinated, as it turns out when the Bill Shanks skulks into camp—seems to have merit. Nathaniel Sackett and Benjamin Tallmadge are cautious and suspicious of Sutherland, but Washington recognizes the name of Bill Shanks, declares him a thief and a deserter, dismissing his assassination theories.
Major John André and Lieutenant Gamble set Bill Shanks up to overhear an assassination plot, banking on him approaching the Continental camp with the information. In reaching camp prior to Shanks and accurately detailing the conditions of his arrival, this lent credibility to Gamble's (Sutherland's) story. Paired with Shank's history, Shanks was thoroughly discredited in Washington's eyes. No longer seen as a threat, Gamble was left alone with Sackett to debrief. He took this opportunity to murder Sackett, and steal the military intelligence Ben and Sackett had compiled, including information regarding the Culper Ring.
